We know your pet is more than just your four-legged best friend — he’s a member of your family. And capturing his precious moments on film is just as important as all other family members.

When you’re snapping pics of your pets, there are some things to keep in mind in order to get the best shots.

First and foremost, make sure your pet feels comfortable. Don’t ever force your pet into a costume or a pose that he doesn’t like.

Also, it’s best to go to your pet. Get down on his level. You know what your pet looks like from above, but do you know what he looks like from the floor? Try sitting on the floor or lying on your stomach to snap pics. Look at the world from his perspective.

If possible, use natural light when taking your pet’s picture. Avoid using your camera’s flash, as it may cause red eye in your pictures, but it also may frighten your pup.

One of the most difficult things when taking pictures of your pet is getting him to stay still. One thing you can try is letting him play quietly by himself then call his name. This will make him alert, which can make for great photo opportunities.

If you are looking to take a more professional approach to photos, hiring a pet photographer is a great option.

Try to schedule the photo session when your animal is somewhat sleepy or has just woken up. It may be easier to keep him still.

Pet photography, whether you choose the professional or amateur route, requires a lot of patience. Don’t get discouraged. That perfect shot will come!

As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to your local pet store if you have questions on this or any pet-related topic.
