Just like humans, dogs need exercise. Being cooped up in the house all day can build up a lot of energy in your pup.

Going on daily walks will not only release built up mental stress a dog may have from being lonely and inside all day, but will also promote good physical health, as they need to get their blood pumping just as we do.  And, not only will both you and your dog be promoting good health, but walks are a very good way for the two of you to bond, as well.

Walking your dog is a great way for the two of you to work as a team. By walking frequently, you are teaching your dog how to obey your commands and trust you. When your pup is still young, frequent walks will incorporate leash training, where the dog learns that you’re in charge, and that they shouldn’t pull you down the street, as it isn’t a race home. There are a lot of distractions during walks that don’t occur inside your home, so it’s good to get them exposed to listening to your commands in different /busy environments.

Dogs who don’t get frequent exercise are at a much higher risk for obesity, which can then cause other underlying problems such as hip and joint issues or heart disease. A simple 30 min walk a day can make sure that your dog (and yourself!) isn’t at a greater risk for any serious medical problems.

If your dog isn’t as active as they should be, they may also experience constipation. Walking is a good way for them to get everything moving properly, to make sure that their stomachs aren’t upset, and everything is working as it should be inside their bodies.

Of course, there are many other methods of exercise you can do with your dog, but walking is the best because it encourages them to learn new behavior skills, allows you to make personal bonds together, and provides them consistency in their day (for example, taking the same loop every day).

Walking is something that old dogs can do, even if they’ve slowed down quite a bit, and something that young puppies are great at too (puppies younger than 18 months should not be taken on jogs just yet). Exercise is important, and walking is a great way to make sure everyone is getting it!

As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to your local pet store if you have questions on this or any pet related topic.
